Description

Title: Teaching Assistant / Instructional Aide

Reports to: Classroom Teacher and Principal

 

Qualifications: A High School Diploma, Associates Degree, or Bachelor Degree is required. Previous work experience with children or adults with special needs, especially those on the Autism spectrum or those with intellectual or developmental disabilities, is preferred. Spanish or Portuguese language speaker preferred. A valid driver’s license with a safe driving record is preferred.

 

Scope of Duties: The candidate will:

- Be responsible to, and function under, the direction of the Classroom Teacher.

- Assist the Teacher in the delivery of instruction in, and the implementation of, the individualized educational plan (IEP) goals and objectives of each classroom student.

- Assist the Teacher in facilitating students' independence, happiness, social and emotional well-being and awareness, language expression and pragmatics, and appropriate behavior.

- Assist the Teacher in ensuring the safety of students and their inclusion across all settings and environments, including the local community.

- Assist the Teacher in the collection and tracking of data and feedback to alter planning, strategies, and methods as needed.

- Participate in routine staff professional development or training.

- Maintain student confidentiality.

- Participate fully in scheduled supervision meetings as needed.

- Carry out any other assigned duties, such as: supporting student self-care and personal care, such as toileting; additional classroom organization tasks; and driving of school vans (if applicable).

- Carry out any other duties as assigned by the Classroom Teacher, Principal, or Executive Director.

 

The candidate must:

- Be able to lift, pull, or push approximately forty (40) pounds, and have the ability to move quickly from the standing-to-floor and floor-to-standing positions.

- Be willing to work with verbally and/or physically aggressive students, and engage in crisis and behavior de-escalation and management training (such as Safety Care).

- Pass both SAFIS fingerprinting and CORI screenings in order to be employed.
