Title: School Social Worker / Counselor
Reports To: Program Principal
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree and Certification as a School Social Worker or School Adjustment Counselor required
- DESE License required
- Previous experience working with students with Emotional/Behavorial disabilities.
Scope of duties:
- Provides therapeutic direction to staff on an ongoing basis regarding students facing specific challenges in their ability to function safely at school or for students in crisis.
- Has the ability to carefully diagnose student difficulties and share this information in a useful and purposeful way with classroom staff.
- Provides outreach to families and effectively connects the families to the classroom staff and to the educational program for that student.
- Participates in IEP meetings and assists in the development of social-emotional goals for the student to be included on the IEP.
- Prepares students for transitions and changes as needed (e.g. high school, preparation of the Transition Planning Form, moving, changes in family structure etc).
- Provides emergency consultation and/or responds to crisis intervention as necessary.
- Provides individual and small group counseling sessions and social skills groups as deemed appropriate in cooperation with the program principal/executive director.
- Provides emotional support for students by being available for check-ins as needed and by providing social scripts/stories.
- Provides consultation and training for staff to aid carryover of social and play/leisure skills to the classroom.
- Provides training for staff and students in Bullying Prevention Plan and curriculum.
- Provides instruction for students related to Physical Health, Social Emotional Helath and Safety and Prevention Strands of the MA Curriculum Frameworks.
- Supervises the Behavior Support Assistant in implmentation of social skills instruction.
- Functions as the primary liaison to caregivers in many instances.
- Leads family meetings and functions as a resource to families. Assists families in accessing community supports.
- Functions as the case manager and keeps the team in close communication and coordinates with collateral supports
- Assists in the intake process for new referrals.
- Assists with coordination of school-wide and community events.
- Other duties as assigned by the program principal or executive director.
