Itinerant Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments/Orientation and Mobility Specialist

 

Share a diverse caseload serving students ages pre-school through high school, 3-22 in a collaborative serving 11 towns.   Responsibilities include providing direct and consultation services as per IEP and 504 plans, completing evaluations including writing goals and objectives as well as updating student progress. Direct and consultation services to students, staff and parents, including in-service training for educational teams and/or parents and participation in educational team meetings.

 

Responsibilities of the teacher of students with visual impairments may include teaching Braille, pre-braille, use of high and low-tech assistive technology relative to visual impairments including computer skills and other compensatory vision skills.

 

Orientation and Mobility services may include teaching concept development, teaching travel skills on and off school campuses, sensory development, instruction in using public transportation, providing instruction in cane techniques and other accessible mobility devices, and providing community based learning experiences.

 

Must be willing to work with verbally and/or physically aggressive students and be able to lift, push or pull approximately 40 lbs and have the ability to move quickly from standing to floor and floor to standing.

 

Employment is contingent upon passing a SAFIS fingerprint and CORI screening.

 

Certifications:

Mass Certification as a Teacher in Visual Impairment

ACVREP

 

Preference may be given to an applicant with dual certification – TVI/O&M
